Q&A with Lori Brizzi - NY Hustle Congress
In timing with The NY Hustle Congress taking place this Labor Day Weekend, staring Thursday August 28, 2008, The Hustle Lounge is interviewing Ms. Lori Brizzi.
Lori Brizzi has been instrumental in keeping Hustle alive in New York City; Lori’s parties held 3 weekends a month at Club 412 and The 92nd Street Y have been a mainstay in many dancers’ agendas and now with her notoriously fun Millenium Hustle Cruises too. Because of Lori, the Epicenter of the World and the dance community, New York City has a major Hustle event The NY Hustle Congress.
Take a look at Lori in this excerpt from Our Generation (about the Disco Generation on The History Channel).
Asia - Lori, funny enough a lot of people know that you are the heart and soul behind your events, and your Millenium Hustle cruise but many don’t know that you are a professional dancer, tell us, how did you come to be a dancer?
Lori - (Laughs) Yes, I know…Actually I come from a family of dancers. My parents met on the dancefloor; my Dad asked my Mom to dance; turns out he wasn’t her type but they danced together anyway fell in love and had a family, with 2 girls who danced since we were very young. My sister and I used to dance all the time, we created shows, as a matter of fact, there are some reel-to-reel films of us somewhere, we were “The Cha Cha Girls”.
Asia - How did you eventually make dance a career?
Lori - Well I wanted to sing, dance and act, so I decided to make it a career and I went to NYU, I was a Theatre Arts Major and started my life in Dance. I went on to be a Dance teacher, and I competed and won titles in International Latin dancing, Theatre Arts and Cabaret. I was with Pierre Dulaine and Yvonne Marceau of the American Ballroom Theatre Company, I was a member of Swing Dance America and I managed Dancesport (Paul Pellicoro’s Studio) for 6 years. I also conceived and produced a Dance act for Cruises and travelled around the world teaching for several years.
Asia - Okay so let’s fast forward a little bit, tell us how you came about getting into Hustle?
Lori - Well there was a certain point when I started looking for a dance partner, I just wanted a partner to dance with, and someone recommended Bernard Martinez (now an LA based Salsa Dancer) from Ballroom on 5th, so we talked and in the conversation he remembered that I was a Hustle dancer and asked me to do a Hustle party with him and I thought ‘Why would I want to do that?’ and went about my way; I had a broken heart at the time, so to cheer myself up I went with Nancy Thomas to Miami to Billy (Fajardo’s) event, IHSC. I got down there and I saw Rob and Tiffany (Brown) were doing Hustle to contemporary music and I loved it. Bobby (Morales) was playing and he was mixing newer music with Classics, which reminded me of the old days, and it was a great feeling. I decided I wanted to do it.
Asia - How did you get it going?
Lori - Well, after I got back to New York, I called Bernard and I said I would do it but only if I could call it the Millennium Hustle party and I wanted all the dances, WCS, Salsa and Hustle, so we did it.
Asia - And you stayed partners with Bernard?
Lori - No, Bernard at some point wanted to close his studio and move to California so I looked around for spaces and continued on after he left. I found the 92nd Street Y, then Club 412 wanted me to take over a night, which I did and we just kept it up.
Asia - You had 3 venues going, 3 different energies; how does that affect the character of your parties.
Lori - Actually I really liked it that way and I still feel it’s great cause you have one venue that is totally casual, another more dressy, it’s great cause it’s not the same thing, it’s good to have one weekend off too.
Asia - Okay so I remember going to your party before there was a NY Hustle Congress, when did the idea for NY Hustle Congress come about?
Lori - Well, David Melendez, being Mr. New York Salsa Congress at the time really wanted to learn Hustle and started coming to my event to learn and dance. He really like Hustle and we became friends and he started coming to my parties all the time, he would come out and dance Hustle before he would go Salsa dancing. One night I ran into him at Il Campanello and he said ‘Lori, I had an epiphany we should do a Hustle event together!’. If it was anyone else I would have said no, but it was David my friend.
Asia - So you started NY Hustle Congress right then and there?
Lori - No, first off I wanted to call it NY Hustle Congress, which David didn’t like, and we went back and forth, but I got my way; and we were all set to start it in PR (Puerto Rico), but the next thing you know he says the Salsa Congress has room and we wound up just having it at the same time, and we went at again cause I said only if my people can go to both at the same time and he agreed. So that’s how we started. And it’s very sad, I miss him very much, but the he passed away at age 51, died very young, of cancer. I really wish he was still here.
Asia - and now you are going on your 4th year.
Lori - Yes, I can’t believe it!
Asia - And it’s coming up tomorrow…your event NY Hustle Congress, THE marquis event of the Hustle world, in the Epicenter of the globe, the World’s greatest city, New York! How do you do it? I mean WHAT makes you want to do it, to keep the benchmark? And keep your great sense of humor!?!
Lori - (Whew! Laughs!) Well, that is a good question; ya know every year I go, okay this is it, I’ve had enough, I just can’t; and then the event gets going and people love it so much! People tell me months afterward, ‘Oh we had so much fun, we can’t wait til this year’, or they will send me emails that they met their fiance or their boyfriend, and it just turns into another year and I keep going. I do it for the dancers. In spite of myself and how crazy I become, they seem to have a great time…(Laughs alot!)
Asia - (Laughing) Yes, we do love it! I mean I know people make major plans way in advance to make this trip to your event. It’s an important Hustle pilgrimage for a lot of dancers around the country, probably because Hustle is so inherently New York. As much as some people love to hate Hustle and it’s relationship to New York, it is still the dance of the People of New York. Of course after all the years, it belongs to everyone, but naturally, New York owns the Hustle culture regardless of what anyone says. The attitude, the character of the dancers, the style, no place is Hustle done with as much flair and feeling as New York and at your event dancers from all over get to experience the whole culture together and that feeling cannot be felt elsewhere. Lori, how is this year going to raise the bar? What do you have planned for the people?
Lori - Well, first off, this year is gonna be like nothing else so far. It is really gonna be spectacular, an unbelievable event. I really feel like I created a party as if money were no object. I mean people have asked me ‘Why did you get the Trammps Lori, you didn’t have to do that’, which I did cause I wanted to make it an amazing event, like nothing before. There is gonna be something for everyone, all under one roof, it’s really gonna be non-stop social dancing. And you know people really come out cause they wanna dance. It’s gonna be non-stop Fri, Sat, Sun, WCS, Salsa and Hustle.
Asia - Okay so tell us about the line up, you have a Heavy Duty Marquis, all the names are bold faced..
Lori - Well this is a Superstar line up, these are the Superstars of Hustle under one roof, anybody that is important in Hustle is gonna be here and it’s gonna be amazing. The best teachers are teaching the workshops, I mean I have Maria Torres, Billy Fajardo, Diane Nardone, Arte Phillips, Loriann & Kelvin, you name it we have it, I mean like ALL the top up and coming Pros, people from So You Think You Can Dance. It’s unheard of, I mean for like the social dancer it’s like a dance orgy (Laughs) !!!
Asia - Tell me about how your Dinner Show
Lori - Well it’s gonna be a fabulous Dinner Show. First off, the ballroom is gorgeous, it’s very fancy, it’s twinkly, Chandeliers, gold leaf walls, opera seating…it’s very beautiful. It’s not the kind of place you’ll feel comfortable wearing jeans to dinner, you’ll be very uncomfortable, it’s going to be fancy. Cicely Thompson & Olisa Bradley (So You Think You Can Dance) are choreographing the Dinner Show and Eddie Simon (a former dance partner) will have a number in it. It’s gonna be really fabulous, and if you don’t have a Dinner ticket, this is not like other shows, you won’t be able to see it unless you are at the Dinner.
Asia - Eddie Simon is your former partner right?
Lori - He’s an old partner of mine. [Editor's note; Edward Simon is also a former Ballroom Champion and choreographer for So You Think You Can Dance.]
Asia - Okay Lori, how do you raise the bar? How do you keep pushing to outdo the year previous?
Lori - Well, I guess everyone has different ways of doing things, but I am a Crab, I’m a Cancer…so I’m instinctual
Asia - Oh, good I was gonna ask your sign, I always do. I find you funny, great sense of humor, irreverent, creative, interesting to know you are Cancer, the Mother of the Astrology.
Lori - Yes, and I guess I do things instinctively, and I strive to grow. I mean everyone does things differently but I strive to be better and I really work toward making this a better experience than the year before. Of course, every year, I learn, I make mistakes and I learn from them. There is no school or course you can take to run a dance event, you learn by making mistakes. Risks too, there are financial risks, big ones, even decisions you make they are all choices and risks. Take a leap of faith, that is what I do, so I guess I am instinctual.
Asia - Lori, all this creating that you do, it can’t be all you have, what else are you promoting?
Lori - I added the Dance Cruise, The Millenium Hustle Cruise. It’s one of the most fun things I have ever done, I love to cruise and people have such a good time. I can’t wait to produce another cruise.
Asia - So, all of the events, the cruise, the 92nd Street Y, what is your motivator? You were voted Person of the Year by the poll of Ron Bess’ Dance Talk readers, and at World Hustle Dance Championships you were presented the Christopher M. Nardone award (For Outstanding Spirit of Giving) by Diane Nardone the event director; you are recognized by your peers, but what makes you do this?
Lori - Well, I run dance parties as if I were creating something for others, and creating an amazing party to dance at, even though I don’t get to dance myself (laughter). People tell me they got divorced and they had to come out dancing, ‘my husband died, I was so depressed I walked into your party and it’s better than an antidepressant or a psychologist’; I create places to dance, it’s not a bar or pick up joint, you meet people in a wholesome environment. People tell me met and married at my parties, I haven’t met anyone yet (more laughs), but they are. Something about looking out on the floor watching people having so much fun and under one roof. I kinda get off on that, that’s a high looking out at everyone having a great time, bringing people together, that feel is my reward; and it’s a great reward
Asia - Well Lori, it’s an amazing thing what you do, keep on doing it. Obviously, your peers and contemporaries have recognized you, which is a beautiful thing. New York City and Hustle would not be the same without you. Thanks for all that you do and see you at the party.

Editorial
Growing up in the suburbs of Philadelphia was advantageous for learning the hustle. I immersed myself into learning and consuming this fascinating dance. What I absorbed was comparable to the art of Karate-the hustle has many forms and styles. Not just one. There were many incredible leaders in the 70’s & 80’s including: James Stanford, Butchie Everett, Tony Marolda, Scott Nurse, Miguel Marrero, Lucas Jamie, Arte Phillips, Jose Gonzales, Juan Hernandez, Hector Berrios, Melvin Curry, Ray Bogart, David Padilla, Jeff Shelley, George Velazquez …the list goes on. The cool thing was, these gentlemen were all tremendous leaders yet they all danced and displayed a different look. Yes, all doing the hustle but with a personalized flair. Hands, arms, posture, foot work, speed, lines, spins, technique etc, they all interpreted the dance differently. I remember going to the Roseland Ballroom, in Manhattan, in the early 80’s and walking around the circumference of the huge dance floor. Hundreds of couples were dancing simultaneously that evening. I explained to a friend, you could virtually identify who was from what area based on their hustle style (Bronx, Queens, Staten Island, Brooklyn, etc) Similar to the way some folks can distinguish a persons accent to determine where they live. The portrayal of your hustle was like your dance DNA. Hustle will continue to exist for decades to come. But again, like any art form, there is a latitude in how you can portray the hustle and…the speed you prefer to dance it. Performing the dance depends on the beats per minute of the song. We loved songs like “Cuba”, “Born to Be Alive”, “Romeo & Juliet”, high energy, quick tempo and exciting…but we also embraced “Rio De Janeiro”, “More than A women” , “More More More”, and other romantic, slower songs. We danced to both speeds and everything in between. Today, we continue to dance to classics as well as the newest club songs heard on satellite radio. I had the honor, as the Master Of Ceremonies, last month to first hand observe the Junior Pro/Am divisions in hustle (where teenagers competed). The hustle dance continues to grow but maybe not as fast as it could. It does need to be energized. How do we win back the youth? That is a Herculean challenge and highly complex issue. There is no silver bullet or fast fix remedy. The disco era was more then just the music & dance, it became a lifestyle supported by clubs, radio, motion pictures and fashion. The hustle of the 70’s crossed over, capturing the interest level of all ages - young and old. Dancing and music are cyclical. The two must meet at the right time to create that symbiotic relationship. Since the music has favored rap for the last few years the songs cater to free style and hip hop dancing, but…it too, will run its course. The planets appear to be aligning for a touch dancing come back. Dancing is everywhere on television. Partner dancing is gaining momentum. But it will take everyone to encourage and welcome the next generation of dancers to get involved. Everyone has to play a part. Has the hustle changed over the years? I don’t know if changed is the appropriate word. I believe the dance has evolved. New patterns and steps have been implemented. The beauty of the hustle has always been the freedom for one to express themselves. The hustle has a rich history. One goal of DanceTalk (over the last eight years) has been to share the roots, biographies, memories and land mark events, that created the foundation for the hustle. It is never acceptable to degrade or criticize fellow dancers based on their style, skill level or age. Nobody wins. We currently have many dance events that provide a wonderful opportunity for new and seasoned dancers to learn, compete and socialize. The organizers take a high financial risk when providing these events. They deserve our praise and support, as they all strive to grow and constantly improve their weekends. Before the disco era, Rock & Roll ruled. There will never be another band quite like the ” Beatles”, but, Rock & Roll will live on forever. The hustle may have experienced some of its better days but the fun and pleasure it brings will continue for new hustle dancers for generations to come.

Time Capsule
In 1979, Bob Fosse put his signature touch on the motion picture “All That Jazz” gaining great reviews. It was a box office success on the big Silver Screen but on the small tube, a new game show was breaking ground and would ultimately become the Grand daddy of today’s TV dance competitions. Merv Griffin always loved dancing. In his youth he performed on Broadway and was later discovered by actress/singer Doris Day. Griffin launched many game shows and ultimately became a media mogul. He went on to host his own afternoon talk show. In efforts to promote the motion picture “Thank God Its Friday,” Casablanca records executives co-oped with Griffin to host a two day promotion event for TGIF. The pre party included clips shown from the movie, Donna Summer performed and they hosted the finals of a national dance contest. The ratings were so overwhelming that Griffin created a spin off of the dance contest, developing a pilot show called “Disco Fever”. After testing & using focus groups, results concluded tweaking the show name. Looking for a more generic title, “Dance Fever” hit the mark. Producer Paul Gilbert traveled the country bringing in winners of regional contests from various cities. These couples would now compete (four couples per episode) head to head on the syndicated show. In 1979 Dance Fever debuted. Merv Griffin, the progressive entrepreneur, was on top of the dance frenzy. With multiple game show hits on his hands (Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune) Griffin could smell a winner. More then 14 million viewers watched weekly, which was 65% greater then the ever popular “Johnny Carson Show”. The show was seen in 125 markets. Dance Fever was aired in most cities on Saturday evenings, via CBS. Lets put this into perspective. The current hit show “So You Think You Can Dance” according to the Nielsen Media research, has been in the top 5 shows all season but has a viewer ship of almost half the original “Dance Fever”. Shows like “Survivor”, “CSI”, “Lost”, “Cold Case” and “Deal Or No Deal” all fall short of the numbers that Dance Fever generated. Now here is the killer. Dance Fever was ranked #1 as the original syndicated weekly show in every major category. Homes - women 18 - 49, 18 +, Men 18 - 49, 18 +. Hosted by Denny Terrio and Motion (his two females dance partners) they would have celebrity judges and musical acts…such as Catherine Bach, Steve Garvey, Anthony Geary, Charlene Tilton, Connie Stevens, Jayne Kennedy, Ann Jillian, Sammy Davis Jr, Rick Springfield, Barry White, Thelma Houston and the one time heart throb - Leif Garrett. Dance Fever enjoyed a 9 year run. Many of the players changed but the theme stayed the same opening the competition to all styles of dance. The show was relaunched on cable in 2005 but had lost its punch. Dance Fever became a spring board for many of the dance couples as well as for one lucky competitor that then became a member of Motion and would go on to a film career; Janet Jones-Gretzky. Merv Griffin passed away last year.

On behalf of my family, I would like to extend our gratitude for the overwhelming generosity and loving support that was received from the dance community at Michael’s on Wednesday night for my Sister Nancy’s Leukemia benefit. Words cannot begin to adequately express how deeply grateful my family is for the kindness, care and concern expressed, prayers offered, and for the generous contributions. It is needed more than you know! I would also like to give a special thank you to Scott Michielli, Patrick Stewart, and DJ Mark for their tremendous help. It would have been difficult for one person to juggle. Scott and Patrick handed out flyers, made themselves available around the room for anyone wanting to buy tickets, and helped man the post, so we could all take turns to get on the dance floor for some dancing in between! DJ Mark did a fabulous job of making announcements throughout the night. It was definitely a team effort, and the support received from the dance community was truly remarkable! An overwhelming “thank you’ from the entire Keegan family.
Sincerely, Mary Keegan
Hi Ron, thank you for including me in your newsletter subscription. I have enjoyed the letters and different topics you cover. I did want to weigh in on the music, speed and advancing the hustle dance. I live in Mechanicsburg Pa and teach/coach high school soccer. In the summer I use to manage a night club outside of Lebanon (2003 - 2006). When I arrived the club had dance bands on weekends. To reduce the over head we hired DJs. Thursday nights were progressive/house night and weekends were pretty much top 40/disco. I agree with some of your readers that new music is what the college kids and young adults want to dance too. When our weekend DJ Nate would pop on an old disco anthem, the floor would get packed by mostly girls jumping up and down in a frantic. New music was the way to get people on the floor dancing together. We would get in some young couples that would hustle and swing dance. (Not sure if it was west or east coast). But the point was that people loved the current music regardless of the speed. From my experience it is not so much the speed of the songs but staying current is what made the difference in central Pa.
Thanks,
Bruce T.
Hi Ron!
I want to thank you and everyone else at Michael’s for making my birthday so special. I had a great time. Thanks to Denise for the cake, DJ Mark for the slammin’ music, Carole and Andre for the awesome table and decorations, video by Denise, Carole and Jeff, and special thanks to Patricia, Tim, Devon, Evie etc! I am grateful to the beautiful line of women who danced with me. They help me continue to earn my title of: “The King of Birthday Dances”!!!

Bay Area Hustle & Flow, preparing for Grand Pacific Dance Championships
In preparation for the fast approaching Grand Pacific Dance Championships The Hustle Lounge made a mad dash wind-whirl (and we mean wind-whirl), tour recently of the best Hustle dancing in the Norcal area with Hustle Pro Raul Ante, who also happens to be one of the Event Organizers for Grand Pacific Dance Championships.

The Hustle scene in the Bay area is known for it’s great vibe, tight unity, familial bonds, also as a breeding ground for exciting new Hustle dancers. The patriarch of the scene is none other Raul Ante, long time Hustle dancer, Hustle Pro, Judge and IHDA officer.
The Hustle Lounge toured through the Bay Area in advance promotion of the Grand Pacific Dance Championships. Escorted by gentleman Hustle Dancer and competitor, Peter Maranan, we attended some great group classes, danced on both Tuesday and Wednesday night parties to meet and greet our fellow Hustle Dancers.

Many of the dancers we met and encountered at CPAA (the Chinese Performing Arts Academy), where the Tuesday night party is held, were busy preparing for Grand Pacific Dance Championships; taking privates, practicing for Pro-Am Competitions, and generally brushing up in the group classes.
Joy Ro was holding court with the members of her formation group preparing for their performance in the Dinner Show. The show is titled “Geeks & Dolls”, choreographed by Joy Ro & Stephen Ward, including dancers and team members:
- Adelyn Hu
- Adji Delorena
- Byron Wilson
- Cindy Lam
- Elizabeth Mc Gee
- Hazel Outlaw
- Heidi Agbayani
- James Outlaw
- Jennifer Chang
- Julius Kotorman
- Mai Vue
- Peter Maranan
- Raymond Abaya
- Robert Nguyen
- Russel Gulman
- Sara Siebe
- Steve Barton
Join the dancing this weekend as Hustle dancers from all over meet to enjoy the Grand Pacific Dance Championships in San Jose.
Read more about Raul Ante and his Hustle story on the upcoming Hustle Pros Q&A Profile, stay tuned…

World Hustle Dance Championships 2008
A World of Dance at World Hustle
A weekend full of Hustle, West Coast Swing, Salsa, and more was what Event Director, Diane Nardone had on hand July 24th - 27th at the 8th Annual World Hustle Dance Championships held at the lovely Hilton Hotel in East Brunswick, NJ. MC Ron Bess (of Dance Talk) along with Robert Royston, worked hard the whole weekend to keep things running smoothly and the crowd energized.

The event offered something for everyone with many workshops, competitions, performances as well as plenty of social dancing and late-night parties.
A plethora of world-class instructors were teaching workshops throughout the weekend. There were three rooms of classes running at once offering a variety of styles and techniques. Along with the exceptional workshops in Hustle, West Coast, and Salsa, there were some added surprises thrown in to keep things interesting. Belly Dancing, Argentine Tango, Cha-Cha, Hip-Hop, Night Club and Country 2-Step, along with a Dips and Tricks Workshop taught by David Paris and Zoe Klein, gave dancers an opportunity to get a taste of something new to spice up their dancing.

If competing is your thing, there were contests for all levels, including Juniors, all weekend long to keep the crowd cheering. One highlight was the Friday night Team Match Challenge where groups consisting of amateurs and professionals went head-to-head in a heated battle. The energy in the ballroom was high as everyone rooted for their favorite team. The Phantastic Philadelphia Pretzels was the team that walked away with the top prize. But every competition at every level had top-notch dancers, and anyone who stepped out on the floor came out a winner!

There was a Saturday night dinner followed by a show that was a highlight of the event. It showcased the talent of the invited staff and gave guests the opportunity to see their instructors at their best. Following the show, there were more Pro Competitions to inspire all of the dancers in attendance to take their dancing to the next level.

Saturday’s late-night party allowed all to put what they learned in their workshops to practice with social dancing that went well into the early morning. Two rooms were groovin’ the whole night. In the main ballroom, Hustle, along with a California Mix of other dances, was played by popular DJ’s Dave Muzii and Mark Routzahn. The West Coast Swing Room was definitely swingin’ with top DJ’s Michael Frank and John Festa keeping everyone on their feet.

Just a few hours later, on Sunday, the social dancing continued along with more competitions. The Hustle and West Coast Amateur Jack and Jills took place, and they are always a favorite at any event. Another treat was the entertaining Hustle and WCS Jill and Jack competitions where the men strutted their stuff and the women took the lead! Even though many people had been up late (or early!) dancing, all the competitors involved had a high level of energy and were able show off their best moves. This was all followed by an awards ceremony for all of the Amateur Competitors. For the hard-core dancers, there was even a post-event party on Sunday evening to wrap up this fabulous event.

If you missed this year’s event, never fear, the 9th Annual World Hustle Dance Championships will be held again next year on July 23rd – 26th, 2009 at the same great location! It promises to be the same diverse and fun event that it was this year, so mark your calendars! You can find out more about this event on Diane’s website at www.hustledanceworld.com.

Spotlight - Jenny Costa
Music has been referred to as the universal language. The right song can touch your inner soul, regardless of your age, sex or socioeconomic background. Music can raise your spirits and bring hope to a potential plight. Jenny Costa could relate to all these situations, music is her life. When Jenny turned 11 years old, she experienced a fascinating new dance. She was captivated. For the past few years she had been studying classical dances-tap, ballet and jazz, but this was different. Jenny Costa really connected with the music and partner dancing, this was the hustle. “Gerry taught me some basic steps and I picked up the rest by watching people dance” explains Jenny. Their dancing went beyond the traditional steps and patterns, they would execute difficult moves like death drops, dips and various types of sweeps. “My dance partner Eddie was my Latin dance partner. Along with my friend Sandy, we performed dance routines for a Latin band back in the late seventies”, shares Jenny. With her partner Eddie, they won many dance competitions, including a round trip to Puerto Rico. All along, Jenny was living a multi faceted life, channeling her artistic ene
